VLADISLAV BLAHA - Guitar



Vladislav Blaha studied at the Brno Conservatoire with Arnost Sadlik before going to the Liszt College of Music in Weimar, Germany, where he graduated as a student of Roland Zimmer. Masterclasses with Costas Cotsiolis, Abel Carlevaro and, with the aid of British Council Fellowship, study in England with Gordon Crosskey (Royal Northern College of Music) and John W.Duarte in London completed his formal learning.

Blaha achieved international recognition as prize-winner in the international guitar competitions in Volos - Greece (1978), in Esztergom - Hungary (1979), in Kutna Hora - Czech Republic (1980), in Markneukirchen - Germany 1981 (all first prizes) and in Radio France competition in Paris 1983.

Blaha has given concerts in most European countries in addition to U.S.A., Asia and Latin America. During his first concert tour in U.S.A. in 1996 (the second tour to U.S.A. was in 1998) he obtained honorary citizenship of city of Dallas. His richness of expression, together with his brilliant virtuosity and stylish interpretation give cause for much critical acclaim throughout the musical world. His involvement with broadcasting and television, as well as his various gramophone recordings should be noted. He is Professor of guitar at Conservatoire in Brno, he frequently gives masterclasses and performs in international festivals (Cannington, Esztergom, Tychy, Brno, Rychnov, Plovdiv, Erlbach, Havana, Oatridge, Gomel...).

Blaha cooperates with other international recognized musicians. In Violin-Guitar Duo - with Jiri Novotny (former first violin player of Janacek Quartet now in Travnicek Quartet). Since 1987 they performed with works by Paganini, Handel, Bach, Giuliani, Stedron, etc. including works written by composers especially for this duo. In Brno Instrumental Trio he plays with Jiri Novotny - violin, and Jaromir Zamecnik - accordion (prizewinner of competitions in Caracas and Paris), works by Piazolla, Trojan, Matys, Fiala, Stedron, Blatny, Janacek etc., (some of them dedicated to the trio). He also plays in duo with flute or harpsichord or organ or singer.

Blaha is a president of Czech Classical Guitar Society (the only guitar society in the Czech Republic) and since 1992 he is director of the International Guitar Festival and Summerschool in Brno. He is rewiever of Classical Guitar - magazine, England and an editor of the Guitar music editon series for the publishers Vagt & Fritz in Germany.
